Good Monday morning, my friends! I hope you had a lovely weekend and stayed cozy and warm. While my family was out and about doing all the things, I held down the fort here at home, comfy as could be. I did warm up the Jeep and venture out for mass and a Dukin' run for coffee, but other than that, I stayed happily busy at home.
This morning was cold. Like cold-cold. So, rather than walking, I admired the beginning of a new day from inside. I did, however, take a few pictures of an early-morning December day around here.
And then, I sat down with my pups and my coffee. Which makes me think of my Grandma Mil. Sometimes, when I sit with my coffee, I think of her. She was my mom's mom and an amazing woman. She could sew, crochet, bake, write, and tell the very best stories ever. She liked to play cards, watch The Price Is Right, and drink a little coffee with her cream! Today is her birthday, and she would be 111 years old.
Grandma Mil
She made the very best pumpkin pie, and when I got married, I asked her for the recipe. She wrote it out on a recipe card with the black marker she always used. I framed it along with a picture of us one Thanksgiving, and Madison had a pie pan made with the recipe on it. I keep these out all year long, and whenever I see them, I tell her hello.
I was thinking back to that cold January day last year, when I had to let go of my momma. I was so overcome with grief to see her go, yet I knew, as sad as I was to let her go, Grandma Mil would be so happy to welcome her home. And that helps. Just a little.
Grandma Mil always sat in her chair by the window in her house. She had a table where she set her coffee, a notebook, her thin black marker, and her phone. I remember stopping at her home and visiting with her when I was a young, newly married teacher. I remember thinking how I would be so happy to do the same. Fast forward some thirty years, and guess what? Yep. I am sitting in my spot on the couch, with my coffee, next to a table with my phone, my notebook, and my thin, black marker. As my mom used to say, "Life is but a dream."
And so, while I was happy to be at home, my children were out living their lives. They know I am always here, cheering for them from the sidelines. One of the most challenging things about being a parent is relinquishing your role as director of activities in your children's lives. It is also, however, the most rewarding. Watching them become happy, responsible adults is one of life's greatest gifts. Even better? Receiving texts and pictures that they wanted to send to share with you all the special and ordinary moments of their lives.
This weekend, while this was happening here at home...
My family was doing things like...
Hunting at our camp in Pennsylvania with Peyton and Chris! And although there exists no photographic evidence of Peyton, I know for sure she was there. How? Well, I recognize her work anywhere!
Madison and Nicolas went to Nicolas' work Christmas party!
And Rhett and Kyrstin were working. We did have some fun together while the others were at camp! Madison and Nicolas had Kyrstin and me over for dinner and a movie!
And Kyrstin and I had fun hanging out with these guys!
Well, this was a long one today! I am going to get cleaned up, make my bed, and pour another cup of coffee. Then I will snuggle on the couch and spend some time reading and catching up with you! Have a wonderful Monday, my friends. Happy Third Week of Advent!

Hi Billie Jo. I loved this post with pictures of your cozy weekend at home and memories of those special people who made you the wonderful woman that you are. I love the recipes on the ceramic pie plate! What a great way to remember your grandmother. Have a good week and stay warm. Enjoy this season of the year, and of life. See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteYour grandma sounded wonderful and I can tell she continues to live on through you. I'm sure she's very proud of you and I wish her a happy birthday in heaven. I am so much like you in the way of preferring to be at home. My grandpa was a lot like that, too. Hope you have a cozy week.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful weekend for everyone!
ReplyDeleteI love your memories of your Grandma. I'd say she passed it on to your mom, who then passed it on to you. :) That pie plate is the best.
I love that pie plate, what a special thing! So good to have the nostolgia and memories of your loved ones this time of year. I am glad everyone had a weekend of goodness in whatever way they best wanted to!
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely tribute to your Grandma Mil. And I love the pie plate made with the recipe! Such a clever idea. I have a recipe box full of my grandma's recipes (as well as her aunt's recipes). Such treasures.
ReplyDeleteLove the fur babies! So cute. It looks like your family is settling down for Christmas! Stay warm!
Thank you for the birthday wishes Billie Jo.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your memories of your Grandma Mil. I love the pie plate and recipe.
Oh my, I love the photo of your sweet dog peeking out at us.
Thank you for sharing!
Carla
Your dog shots are totally adorable!!! I wish I could hold and pet them!! And your outdoor shots from inside look like you were, indeed, outside. I really love your high ceilings and beautiful windows. I can totally relate to you about your grandma, as I had much the same experience with mine. She is gone now and with my mom. Your mom's saying about life is but a dream reminds me of what Edgar Alan Poe said..."Life is but a dream within a dream". Looks like all of you are having so much fun!
ReplyDeleteAs always, Billie Jo, your post here is delightful. All the pictures, the mugs of coffee, and reminiscing over loved ones now passed as well as those here now. Your blog is a comfort to read! OH! I must not forget the PRECIOUS pictures of the pups! They are so cute!
ReplyDeleteIt is a true joy to visit you here. Much love to you. Hugs.

The cozy photo of the tree and the scene in the window are lovely. (:
ReplyDeleteLove all of the cozy here dear Friend! Especially loved learning more about Grandma Mil. Happy heavenly birthday to her. And Christmas blessings to your sweet Momma. Time for lots of busy over here so I'll be taking a blog break for a bit. Wishing you, dear Billie Jo, and all your family a very Merry Christmas and blessed and Happy 2026! 🎄🌟
ReplyDeleteOh how I can relate to the changing role as our children grow. Tonight, my girl, is having a "Thanks Christmas" dinner with friends. I've received a call asking when to start the potatoes for mashing + pictures of the potatoes and the turkey she baked. It does my heart good to know that as she ventures into the world, she still needs her mother. Enjoy your cozy!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea with the recipe in the pie plate. A lovely keepsake.
ReplyDeleteYour grandma Mil got me thinking of my own maternal grandma. Such a sweet post.
ReplyDeleteBillie Jo, there's so much to love about this post today. First, I enjoyed the story of your grandma Mil. She sounds like a wonderful woman with many talents. I chuckled when you said 'drink a little coffee with her cream'. It's funny, my aunt and mom always had to have that cream in their coffee. That was such a creative idea Madison had to write the pumpkin pie recipe on the pie pan. And that's a sweet picture of you and her. I smiled at that Christmas Captain Crunch. I just bought it for my son, as he's a cereal lover. How wonderful that Peyton and Flynn go hunting with their dad. And The Little Drummer Boy movie! Such a classic, and very special. Your Cindy Lou coffee cup is the most delightful ever, love that.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful December week, Billie Jo. I just loved this post today. It was filled with merry and bright. : )
