I Think...

My childhood was the best. Why? Well, when I was young...

We had toys that we could play with for hours and hours without getting bored.

We shopped in small stores where we knew all the people working there.

We played outside in the creek, in the yard, and on the playground until Mom called us to dinner.

We appreciated special things because we waited all year for them.

We simply picked our Halloween costumes off the shelf of the store downtown.

We had TV shows we could watch together as a family.

We ate dinner together as a family.

Life was simpler then. You knew your neighbors and the people in your neighborhood. The news was on for an hour a night. Our lives were smaller, but more peaceful and less stressful. We knew what we needed to know, and not everything that was happening everywhere all at once. It was fun. Just as childhood should be.

Happy Wednesday, my friends.

  3. This was such a fun and memory drawing post, Billie Jo. I remember bike riding, the playgrounds, walks to the neighborhood store with a nickel or dime and getting a small sack of candy (what a treat), the Good Humor truck during the summer months, and all the neighborhood moms looking out for and/or fussing at all the kids (and not just theirs).

  6. Oh this brings back so many memories!! I had that exact mask one Halloween. Lol I loved the neighborhood I grew up in - we all knew each other. We would have block parties and giant whole block water balloon & squirt gun fights. I never realized until I got older how truly blessed I was to live on such a dead end street and quiet neighborhood with such great people all around me. One of them is still a best friend today!
Sometimes I go down the tik tok wormhole of Christmas nostalgia. There are a lot of people that post neat things about that and it feels just like it used to. Thanks for the trip of memories! 💗

  8. Yes, to all of this. I remember in particular that Sister and I could play for hours on end with our paper dolls.

  9. Yes, those were certainly the best of times. I am so glad that's how I grew up!!

  10. Yes, the news was on for one hour a day only! And no T.V. remote. We would go outside and play all day with no adult supervision...a sad fact that almost no kids can do that anymore. That Halloween mask brings back memories!

  11. This was my childhood too and it was wonderful, peaceful and amazing. And we didn't know any different way of life.
I have a question for you. I've been trying to write a post for over 2 weeks. Blogspot says it's been "redacted". Any idea what that means? Help!
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  12. Yes yes yes!!! Everything in this post is my world and I think about these things on a daily basis. You know that! :) I often wonder why or how things changed. Let's go back to those times. Wouldn't that be nice?! Drinking iced coffee now and thinking of you my friend! Xx

  14. I loved playing "Fisher-Price", as we called it. We had the airport, and the schoolhouse...I remember that feeling of wanting that schoolhouse so badly, it was $8.99 in the Sear's Wishbook, which we fought over and had to take turns with. We played in the creek, and had neighborhood games of jump rope and hide and seek. Counting the days until Rudolf was on! We didn't eat at the table like that though, I grew up with an unpredictable father, we called it manic depressive then, but he never was formally diagnosed. He was good hearted, but he had a temper. We had to learn when to keep a low profile, so childhood was a bit stressful too. Thankfully our mother was wonderful. (I raised my own kids mostly without t.v. or news, we didn't get one until we had 9 kids, then we only watched limited movies here and there...so their childhoods were pretty decent:)). I loved this post, love visiting here!

  15. I'm in Australia and except for Halloween, my childhood was very similar. Neighbours all new each other and we are still friends with them, even though most have all moved. I remember going to the creek to catch tadpoles and climbing back up the slope my sister saw a snake and gave the biggest scream. Playing in the street or around the corner, about 6 pm we would hear dad's distinct whistle and we knew it was time to go home for dinner. Wonderful memories.

  16. Yes, yes, yes! To all of these things! We knew the time and day by what was on tv and when. For instance, every night we watched Wheel of Fortune at 6:30, right after the news. On Saturday night we watched The Love Boat (that I never let my boys watch :), Fantasy Island and The Carol Burnet Show. Sunday nights it was The Wonderful World of Disney. We also had to wait for the Charlie Brown pumpkin show, Rudolf, Frosty and the Little Drummer Boy to come on once a year. Also Wizard of Oz. We did most of our playing outside and I collected plastic horses, records, barbies and Ziggy cartoons and Love Is...cartoons. You know we could go on and on :) Thanks for the memories!

  17. These things all look very familiar and bring back some nice memories. Often simple is better, IMO social media, tech and Netfix/HBO porn, gore, filthy language have crapped all over American culture. Not to mention dumbing people down several degrees.

  18. I am just glad I was raised before cell phones and social media. I think those things make childhood so much more difficult.

  19. And because I had such fond memories like this I raised my boys like this as well; in fact as I read through your remembrances I asked my middle son if he thought these applied to his childhood as well and he did!

  21. Great post Billie Jo. Reminds me of my growing up years. My mom and dad made sure that we as kids got to experience the life that kids need to enjoy. Fishing at the family branches, climbing trees, dinner always at the table, church and visiting aunts, uncles and cousins. I so wish kids now days could experience all of the love..

  22. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this post. Our worlds certainly were smaller back then. These days it is much TOO much with 24 hour news. I liked it better when TV shut down at midnight, phones were attached to the walls and there was no internet, no cell phones etc....

  23. Wonderful post. There is just so much that I miss about the simple life I enjoyed as a child. I wish children today could experience it. I just love these throw back, memory-filled posts!! Happy Friday to you friend!
