September Monday Morning Coffee

Good Monday morning, my friends! Happy Labor Day, and Happy September!

I love September. Perhaps because it is my and Steve's birthday month. It may be because September reminds me of colorful, sharp crayons, fresh, clean notebooks, and shiny new textbooks. It could be because September brings the promise of cooler breezes, a less harsh sun, and leaves replacing mosquitoes swirling through the sky. Perhaps I love this beautiful month so because watermelon and peaches are replaced with apples and pumpkin spice, and crockpots take the place of cookouts. It may be because September draws us inward, inside on earlier evenings, cozy throws and candles surrounding us as we snuggle in for the evening. Or it could be a combination of all these things, along with the knowledge that the hustle and busyness of summer afternoons are replaced with slow, calm, and intentional cozy autumn evenings, and that the soft glow of Christmas tree lights is not far away. Whatever it is, I am here and all in!

Thank you all so much for your kind comments on my previous post, which shared photos of our new home. We are grateful and settled, and looking forward to making this house our home. Perfect timing because I will be decorating for fall this weekend! I'd like to share a few things I've realized as a result of this recent move. First, the appliance industry and society do a great job of making us believe we need it all. We needed to purchase a new washer and dryer for this house, so Steve and I went to the store and were overwhelmed by the numerous washers and dryers, which made my head spin. No pun intended. The washer and dryer in our previous house were highly complex and had numerous options, buttons, beeping sounds, and flashing lights. I knew I hadn't used half of the options, and I really didn't want or need to learn to pre-treat, then sanitize, then rinse, and then ultra-spin my clothes daily. I didn't need four choices of different levels of wrinkle resistance either. I knew I wanted a basic washer and dryer that would wash my whites on hot and my colors on cool, and dry them on high, medium, or low. I found them, and I'm thrilled!

Something else I learned while packing up my house to move is that I am constantly exposed to things. Things I don't need. Things I may like or think are cute, but really don't need. Holiday items are my downfall. I realized that just because I walk through HomeGoods or Target and see the cutest little pumpkin napkin holder, I don't have to buy it. I don't have to purchase cute new things to add to the adorable new things I bought last year. People used to go to the store when they needed something. Now, I am afraid that society dictates that shopping is a necessity, a hobby, and buying is the ultimate goal. I made this move intentionally. I chose to bring only things that I had a connection to, that were useful, and brought me joy. And, although social media influencers will try to convince me that I absolutely must run out to buy the pumpkin and ghost plates they absolutely love this season to replace or add to the adorable ones they pushed me to buy last year, I say no, thank you. We have too much stuff. And I am hopping off the consumer excess train. I can hear Steve singing with joy right now.

How can I better spend my time this September? Rather than buying, I will strive to be doing, being, appreciating, and savoring. Last night we went for a walk on the boardwalk, and it was nice. Here is a picture of my girls and me.

What do you notice?? Yep. That is Peyton! She and Chris came down to visit for a few days, and I was totally, unbelievably, blessedly surprised! Saturday night, FLynn, Steve, and I were settling in after dinner, and I was folding laundry in the laundry room. Flynn had just told me she had called Chris to ask if he could play video games, and he couldn't because he was mowing the grass. The next thing we know, they are standing in the living room! They had cooked this up with Steve to surprise us, and it worked!!! I am so happy!

Rhett was working last night, but he and Kyrstin will be joining us for some fun these next few days. And I will be happy to have all my chicks back in the nest for a few days!

I never shared these photos of the hurricane's effects from last week. Thankfully, it remained out in the ocean, but still managed to produce some incredible wind and waves.

Well, I need to get going with my September day. Don't forget, if you are following along on the September calendar I posted a few weeks ago, it begins today! Here is the schedule for this week.

Have a wonderful day, my friends.
Thank you for visiting!

Billie Jo

  3. Amen to all your words about buying new decorations! Just a word about washers and dryers, too. My daughter was in a rental a few years ago that had Maytag W & D that weren't electronic which she loved. When she bought a home, she purchased the same ones. I'm surely going to look for them when I need new ones; seems the newer machines have way more functions than we even want or use and they don't live as long! Blessings. . .

  4. I agree with VIckie! Amen to the excess. I tried to find a plain washer/dryer when we moved here from Washington. It was almost impossible. The condo came with a brand new set and they have more settings than I need.
I'm so happy, happy, happy for you that you have all of your chicks here. I know how wonderful that is. It's been over five years since all of our kids have been together at once. I do miss it.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  5. Those are great realizations about stuff and shopping. It's good for all of us to hear and think about.
Love your views, even when you're dealing with hurricane effects.
I'm so happy for you to have Peyton and Chris there. That's a great surprise! Your pic of you and the girls is lovely.

  6. Hi Billie Jo! Happy September and Happy birthday month to you and Steve! My daughter Tiffany's birthday is today, September 1, and she is 41 years old. Where does the time go?!? I wasn't in blog land much last week, so I went back to your last post and saw the pictures of your beautiful new home. I hope that you will have much happiness in your lovely new space! I completely agree with your thoughts about September. I love the fall too! Charly and I both have October birthday. Fall is my favorite time of year. I hope you have a nice, relaxing Labor Day and that you have much to enjoy in the week ahead!

  9. While I do love a cookout.. the bugs.. ugh so it'll be nice to eat indoors.. I can already smell the simmering soups and bubbling chili. I do love the summer fruit and the days being longer.. but the changing colors of fall are also a delight.

  11. What a fun surprise to have your kids show up! I love that! My sister's family did that to us once. My niece called me to see if I was home because she really needed to talk. (They lived in a different state.) When I said yes, she said she'd call in just a few minutes. Then there was a knock at the door. :) SO much fun! Happy, happy September!

  12. My MIL will be 93 in a few days. She hasn’t give up on “stuff” yet. She recently turned down a room in a seniors’ home because the closet was too small. It wouldn’t even hold her winter coats.

I pray I will let the stuff go in time. I don’t add anything new, just the essentials.

Enjoy your time with family and your new home!

  13. Yes, yes, yes to stepping off of the consumer excess train! For the last year I have been very thoughtful about what I bring into my home.

  14. Yes! I love "cute things," but I already have too many of them. I did well on my trip to Africa and didn't buy every cute zebra thing I saw, though I was tempted. I've been doing well on donating and re-homing and it's the best feeling. Happy September!

  15. Oh, I love seeing your kiddos all back together. I love when we get our chicks back in the nest for a bit. I also feel ya on the consumer train. I have been trying the past two years to be more intentional about my purchases and the things we bring into the home.

  16. I love how cozy and reflective your post feels. You really capture why September is special and how slowing down, appreciating what we have, and spending time with family matters more than buying things. Makes me want to savor every moment too.

  18. What a beautiful post Billy Jo.
I liked his suggestion to make, to feel... and not to buy.
May the whole family be healthy and happy like now!

  21. Oh my gosh, I LOVE that Snoopy picture - it's so Fall looking! I know what you mean about the appliances. We just need the simple basic ones to get the job done. We do have too much stuff, and it's smart that you are not buying as much these days. I have given a lot away myself. Although, I do love shopping, so it's nice to get a treat when I give something away. Peyton looks so radiant in that picture wearing red. And a cute one of you and the girls. Fall is here, and I'm all in too, Billie Jo! Happy September!

  22. Billie I am in the same boat as you when it comes to holiday decor... How much do you really need?

  23. I love the way you describe September! It's perfect! I, too, am looking forward to those things as well. I am SO excited that you had all of your kids home for a few days! How wonderful! I know no matter how old they get, it feels good to have them home with you sometimes. And why does Flynn look so grown in those pictures?!? I'm glad you are settling in and finding the things you really need and letting go of the things you don't. Take care!

  24. Yay for the "BER" months and our favorite time of year! I'm so ready to dive into the cozy to come. I've already been researching recipes that I'm excited to try. And scouting out pretty places I Matt to see around here, that he still hasn't since living in this area. And how cool that Peyton and Chris surprised you! Love that!
I had missed your last post so I just went back and checked it out. Wowzers!! What a gorgeous place. 😍 I LOVE how light and bright it is - all those windows are heavenly. And that kitchen is stunning! I have no doubt it will be feeling Autumn cozy in no time. Lol I need to get motivated to haul out mine and I don't even have a moving excuse. All in good time, right? Happy housewarming and happy Autumn in the air days ahead my dear Friend. May you be blessed there always. xo

  25. Hi Billie, thanks for stopping off at my blog and for your kind words. I like that list of things to do for September and I have only added sunflowers to my seasonal tree. I hope to decorate next week. I caught up with your last couple of post. Your new home looks lovely! Once the weather cools, I will continue my declutter process. Enjoy the rest of the week!

  26. I love this post! The list, the surprise visit, the photos of the storm-tossed waves...all of it :)
And I couldn't agree more on cutting back on the trinkets and things we buy. After packing and selling so much stuff that wouldn't fit into the apartment, I realized that this is what we all do. We buy, get rid of, buy more and the cycle just keeps going. Now I'm trying to be very intentional about what I spend money on and bring into the apartment. It has to be something that I really love and is my style. That's definitely an upside to downsizing (hahaha). You can't own as much, because you just don't have the space.
I hope you have a wonderful first week of September in your beautiful new home.
