This Makes me Happy...My New Planner

A new year means a brand new, blank desk planner. Ahhh....happiness! I have been keeping a simple yearly desk planner for years and years now. It is the place I write everything down. Once it is in the planner, it is as good as gold! Every year right after the Christmas excitement is over, I set up my spot at my kitchen table and get to work. This year, Madison and Peyton got me my planner for Christmas. And it is beautiful! Let's just take a moment to admire it, shall we?

Now, to organize it for the new year, I gather last year's planner and copy all important birthdays and anniversaries for the year. Then I copy all appointments that are already made for the upcoming year. I just keep all those little appointment cards we have received for future appointments at the dentist, doctor, eye doctor, etc. and once copied in the planner, I throw them away. Hooray! Less clutter means happy me. I also add days off of school from the school calendar and of course assorted stickers because I am weird like that. That's it...my new planner is all ready for the year ahead. Now it is ready to take its place on my desk where it will remain, open all year long.

Oh, and yes, I do keep all my old planners. Because they don't qualify as clutter. I mean, someday I may need to look back and see what day Rhett's 3rd birthday fell on, right? I know it is silly, but my new planner makes me happy.

What's Inside My January Folder

A new month is here, and that means I pull out a brand new monthly folder! And yes, I really do get excited about that...sad, I know!  As I wrote in an earlier post about my weekly and monthly planning, I keep a basket on my desk with 12 monthly folders tucked inside. The first of each month I pull out the folder and take a peek at what is inside. Here is my January folder...

and here is what is inside...

The first thing inside is the January poem. Every month, I hang a  poem on the bulletin board in the kitchen. This month it is called "Little January".

                                      Little January
                            Tapped at my door today.
And said, "Put on your winter wraps,
                          And come outdoors to play."
                                       Little January
                                  Is always full of fun;
                                   Until the set of sun.
                                       Little January
Will stay a month with me
And we will have such jolly times-
                               Just come along and see.
                                 Winifred C. Marshall

The next thing in the folder is my handwritten list of things to do this month.
                            January
 1. New Planner organized
 2. Put Christmas decorations away
 3. Clean good
 4. Kids- Thank Yous for Christmas
 5. Pack away Christmas clothes
 6. Wash and put out Valentines clothes
 7. Begin to look for Valentines
 8. Order supplies for upcoming holidays
                Chinese New Year
                Mardi Gras
                Valentine's Day
                St. Patrick's Day

There is also a Prayer for the New Year and An Epiphany House Blessing
And lastly...a print out reminder of Chocolate Cake Day! It is celebrated every year on January 27!

And that is my January Folder! Happy Planning!

Weekend Plans

The first weekend of 2013 is here, and we are still celebrating Christmas! Friday night we are having my parents up for a double celebration. First...Christmas. Because Flynn had a severe case of the flu, the doctor advised us against having my parents up because of their age. So we will be exchanging gifts with them. Friday is also my father's 78th birthday! I am having pizza and wings, a favorite of his, and am making a pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing to celebrate.

Saturday during the day is free. Madison will be should be studying for midterms, and the rest of us will be taking it easy! Saturday evening we will attend Mass, then head down to my sister's for a Christmas with her and her husband. We usually do this Christmas week, but I am glad we rescheduled. It gave the children something to look forward to as they went back to school.

Sunday we have nothing planned. I hope to start my scrapbooking. Or at least organize my supplies on the table to at least fool myself into thinking I started my scrapbooking. If it is not too cold, Steve may take the older kids sledding out behind the house. They are hoping he gets out the snowmobile too! Steve and I make a great team. He is all about outdoor activities, and I am in charge of clothing preparation and refreshments! In other words, he goes out and I stay in, nice and warm! Dinner Sunday will be a yummy lasagna roll-up recipe I got from my blogger friend Patty. The recipe is here.
I plan on having fresh bread and fruit salad too.

Well, that is our weekend. I hope yours is happy and cozy and fun, whatever your plans may be!

Madison and Ryan and some fun winter photos...

I love this one!

Kirby enjoyed the kids being home!

Someone is feeling much better, but she still gets sleepy during the day!

Christmas and New Years 2012

We celebrated a modified Christmas this year, thanks to an unwelcome guest, otherwise known as influenza, which arrived at our house promptly on Christmas morning. But, I am getting ahead of myself. First, Christmas Eve...my favorite day of the year. We awoke early and began our annual Christmas Eve Day traditions...

We lit our special candle...

we decorated the table...

we set out some goodies...

and we posed for the annual Christmas Eve photo before Mass.
(As you can see, my sweet Flynn was not feeling herself.)

At some point during the day, I began to suspect that Flynn may be getting sick. So in between doses of sticky, purple Tylenol, I willed her to be fine. And she did perk up enough to attend Mass. We all went to bed that night with sweet dreams in our heads.

Christmas morning we awoke to snow and sniffles. It quickly became apparent that Flynn was not alright. She was burning up and inconsolable. My heart broke for her and for my other littles, as I realized that the Christmas I had envisioned was not going to happen. It was quickly mended, however, as my older children unselfishly told us to take her to the doctor and they would wait to open presents until she was back. Madison even offered to go with Steve to allow me to stay home with Peyton and Rhett. The doctors at the Emergency Room tested her and concluded it was a  severe case of the flu which would be very bad for five days before she would start to come around. She returned home, I gave her a quick bath, and we proceeded to have Christmas!

The kids were thrilled with their gifts from Santa. That Santa...he always knows, doesn't he?

Madison was thrilled with her Ipad...

Peyton was thrilled with hers, too...

Rhett was excited about his television for his room...

and I loved my gift from Steve! A Princess Diana Wedding Doll!

This is what my sweet baby was doing while all this was going on around her.

We spent Christmas week snuggled in our country home while the snow fell...over a foot!...and the world went on around us. We camped out on the sofa and coughed and sneezed...Peyton, Rhett, and I all got colds! We watched movies and sipped soup and tea. We laughed until we coughed and enjoyed our time together. Steve and Madison held things together and thanks to my organization, we had everything we needed right here. By Saturday, Flynn felt well enough to open her presents. And it was worth the wait.

She loved her Little People Princess Castle...

and the American Girl Baby was a dream come true!

New Year's Eve came quickly, and we were ready to celebrate!

We set another festive table...

set out the last of the goodies...

got the games ready...

set out a yummy dinner of meat and cheese for sandwiches...

and fresh fruit for dessert!

We had a fun night together playing games, snacking, and watching movies. At midnight we were all still up, and wished each other a Happy New Year! Then...we went to bed!

Today, New Years Day is one of my favorite days. It is also one of my least favorite days. I love the new start. A fresh new page in this book of life. I like putting my home back together and cleaning from top to bottom. I look forward to new tv shows, and long winter evenings snuggled in with those I love. I am sad, however, that my littles will return to school tomorrow. I miss them when they are at school. I will also miss the music, the cards, the magic that is Christmas. But, as I tell my children, it doesn't matter what day the calendar says...as long as we are together...we have fun...we laugh...we love... together. And that is what I wish for all of you in this brand new year...happy, healthy, love and laughter with those you love! Happy New Year, friends!
