Hello, my friends. And Happy Friday! Do you ever feel like you want to say something like, "Stop the world, please. I'd like to get off." I mean, I would at least like to ask if it could slow down a bit! Jeesh! I remember as if it were yesterday, coming home as a teenager, popping my head into my parents' bedroom, where my dad would be acting as if he were watching TV, when we all knew he was waiting for each of us to get home before he fell asleep, and filling him in on my night. He used to tell me something at the time I couldn't understand, yet I never forgot. He told me not to wish my life away, because the older you get, the faster it goes.
Of course, sixteen-year-old me smiled and kissed him goodnight before going off to my room to listen to my stereo and talk to my friends on my little white corded phone. We talked about an upcoming Chemistry test, prom dresses, and how many days until summer. Those days, school years lasted forever, and summer was three whole months of long, lazy days. I suppose we honestly thought they would last forever. Suddenly, I am fifty-six, with a sixteen-year-old of my own, memories of my mom and dad in my heart, and months and days that pass so quickly they feel like a dream. I keep a picture of my dad on my refrigerator and often tell him that I get it now. I do. And I think of what my mom used to say, too. Life is but a dream. So I try to remember those things in the midst of this roller-coaster ride of life. I try to slow myself and relish the small moments that make up these quickly passing days. Like these...
Madison getting me this precious bunny with a ribbon that matches my kitchen accent perfectly. Just because...
The beautiful pictures she and Nicolas send when they visit the ocean on a random Thursday morning...
The pictures I snap on an ordinary, cloudy day during my morning walk...
After-school wind-down time with pups that wait all day for this moment...
My ten-year-old puppy that is my shadow...
And cookies fresh from the oven...
There are so many more, like afternoon calls with Peyton on speaker, Rhett and I eating Panera DoorDash before he heads to work, Flynn and I sitting in our little schoolroom, talking, laughing, and learning, Steve taking all the puppies outside over and over, and Kyrstin organizing our evening Boggle game. Just little moments making up our ordinary lives.
And to add some lightness to all this seriousness, here are a few reminders not to take ourselves too seriously, courtesy of Pinterest.
Happy Weekend!
And for a little treat to start off Holy Week, how about having a sundae bar for Palm Sunday? I mean, I don't need an excuse to eat ice cream, but why not, right?
Billie Jo

Beautiful post, Billie Jo. I love how you see the best of life! I enjoyed your memories of being 16. And those first two quotes from Pinterest made me laugh out loud! Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteFrom me :P
DeleteBeautiful post!!! The bunny is perfect!
ReplyDeleteEvery time I put something in a safe place where I will remember to find it, then I can never find it! Your mom and dad were so wise! I love the shot of the posts in the sand with their shadows and all the footprints!
ReplyDeleteHa! You really made me laugh with your funnies at the end.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad used to tell me something similar to your Dad. When my kids were very young, he would say to enjoy each moment and don't hurry them because it goes by so quickly. It's so true!
The bunny is adorable!
Its the ordinariness (is that a word?) of life that makes it sweet. And yes, the older we get, the faster the days pass. And to me, 16 feels not so long ago, but it was almost 50 years. (:
ReplyDeleteThoughtfully written with smiles and chuckles at the end. So pleasant.
ReplyDeleteWeeks certainly do fly by. I can honestly say I have never wished time away. I enjoyed being a kid and was never in a hurry to grow up. Probably one reason I always got picked on as a kid. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet bunny!! Yes, time goes faster and faster the older we get. That's for sure. Wishing you a beautiful and blessed Easter week ahead!
ReplyDeleteYears ago I worked with a lady that always told me not to wish my life away. It's been over 20 years since we worked together and I still think of her wise words often. Especially when I'm having a stressful week and looking forward to Friday evening.
ReplyDeleteThe sundae bar sound perfert. Enjoy!
"Not to wish my life away"---ah yes...and here I sit being reminded of this. smiles
ReplyDeleteThese are some great memes/quotes. I'm right there with you Billie Jo...and a Sundae bar is just exactly what I need right now. Life goes on, memories fill our minds even as we make new memories.. The days are passing fast....And still I say, thank goodness for Friday's..
ReplyDeleteThat's very interesting about what your dad said. It was definitely right. Time keeps passing faster the older we get. Love the bunny. Sweet photos at the beach. The dogs are just so adorable. The cookies look delicious. Those moments sound lovely.
ReplyDeleteWise words by both your parents. Never need a reason for ice cream. I think it's always ice cream season. lol. Wishing you a wonderful rest of the weekend. Cheers, Ivy.
ReplyDeleteI looked at the calendar and wondered how on earth did we get to the end of March so quickly? It's crazy how fast time goes. As a kid I thought it felt slow and my mom, too, told me not to wish life away. Now it feels like I can't even keep up. I loved the seriousness of this post but also the funny memes at the end. You're an incredible blogger.
ReplyDeleteHello, dear friend! Your parents were very wise people. I remember my mom often telling me the same thing in my teens and my twenties and I didn't get it at the time, but do I ever get it now. I'm a 50 year old with a 17 year old and I have no idea where all the years have gone. Like you, I'd love for time to slow down a bit. And how is it already the end of March?? Enjoy your ice cream bar for Palm Sunday! It sounds like a delicious idea! Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t agree more…time flies. I remember hearing,, “ Time flies, whether you’re having fun or not.” So that bunny, the phone call, DoorDash, Boggle-all of those sweet and simple things are the most perfect way to spend these days. Even “every day” days can be special - so grateful to have found your blog, BillieJo. I do believe we’re peas in a pod as they say :)
ReplyDeleteThat first one made me chuckle. I was at the supermarket earlier and noticed the egg carton stated, 'High in protein.' You don't say :)
ReplyDeleteI actually just posted about the same exact thing regarding time. I remember when I was young summer seemed to last forever and the time from one Christmas to the next seemed SO long. Even just a simple snow day seemed to be so long. Yet now, it all goes by so quickly.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're enjoying a wonderful weekend.
'First thing you notice when someone approaches you,' that made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteYours isn't the first blog I've read tonight that started with how busy things are right now. I've put off blogging because there's just so much going on, it's good to know I'm not alone.
Love hearing about all the family time! So beautiful. And those beach pictures are so inviting!
Have a great week!
Life does fly by, it seems faster and faster, the older we get! And memories of when we were younger are treasured and so very special. You are making the best memories now with your children! And just wait until grandbabies show up :) Blessings to you dear friend!
