Good Morning, my friends! Here we are, beginning the second week of October, and with apologies for sounding redundant, I feel the days passing faster and faster. It was just July, and I was beginning to get the first glimpse of an inkling that it may be time to start thinking about autumn. Now we are smack dab in the middle of this cozy, pumpkin-spiced, changing leaves, spooky movie, cooler weather season, and I remind myself to slow down and enjoy. I recognize that I need to let go of the pressure to recreate or match the Octobers of the past. I often measure my seasons against the previous ones and struggle to fit in all the traditions as if time stood still. Note to self: Stop doing that. Watch as many favorite movies as you choose, and may I suggest Halloweentown and The Wolfman? Sit on the porch during a sunny afternoon and watch the leaves slowly float to the ground. Get cozy inside during the early evening with fairy lights and a Jack-o-lantern to keep you company. Lastly, while I commit to staying in the present and appreciating every bit of October magic I can, I also admit that I need to look ahead to the festive months of November and December that arrive at the stroke of midnight Halloween night. Therefore, I am jotting down ideas for decorations and presents in my little red notebook, decorated with Santa Claus and candy cane stickers.
What did the first weekend of October look like around her? It was quiet and cozy and sunny and pleasant. There were errands, pizza, naps, laundry, church, phone visits, and movies before bed.
And visitors during morning coffee,
Blooming mums in pretty colors,
And a precious pup finding every ray of sunshine she can. And there was this photo my sister sent me of my beautiful momma sitting outside waiting to watch the Homecoming Parade in my hometown. This picture brought happy tears to my eyes. She is so beautiful, inside and out. Margie told me she loved the parade, especially the band, and was clapping along! This has always been my prayer for her, peace and happiness because that is what she brought to me every single day of my life. Every time I marched in the Homecoming parade, she made sure my uniform was clean and my majorette boots were as white as possible. (Remember the bottles of white shoe polish we all had to cover those black scuff marks?? ) Mom always opened our home to my friends afterward. She made hot chocolate on the stove and toast with melted butter to warm us up. She made my life happy. And I pray I am doing the same for her.
Have a lovely Monday, my friends. Prayers for everyone dealing with the remnants of the hurricane and those in the path of the new one this week.
Billie Jo

ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely picture of your mama in her red sweater. I'm so glad she enjoyed the parade passing by. Great memories of when you marched in the parade and your mom making sure your uniform was just right for your special day. The Mums are so pretty. They just say Fall to me. And that red cardinal! The little ghost drinking the hot drink is too funny.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed week, Billie Jo.

That's such a beautiful picture of your mom! She looks great and so happy! I love red cardinals! Every time I see one I think of my dear mom, she loved them too. I hope you are having a cozy October day! I love your purple mum.
ReplyDeleteI want to hear your Christmas decoration ideas! Your Mums are gorgeous, and what a great photo of the Cardinal. Your Mom is wearing such a pretty sweater.
ReplyDeleteHi Billie Jo. The end of your post is a beautiful tribute to your mother. You and your sister are so blessed to have been raised in a home with loving, God-fearing mother. I love this post and the way you savor and celebrate ordinary days and the love of home and family. I hope you have a wonderful week, my friend. Take care and I will see you again soon!
ReplyDeleteContinued Happy Fall to you!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad your mom was able to enjoy the homecoming parade.
BTW as soon as you mentioned that white shoe polish, I could "smell" it in my mind.
It brought tears to my eyes reading about you and your mom, how beautiful you described yourmother/daughter relationship. Even though it made me cry, it brought back my mom for a minute. Thank you Billie Jo
ReplyDeleteYour post reminded me that I had said I was going to have a cup of hot cocoa this morning. Well, here it is nearly suppertime... geez, am I getting forgetful? Maybe I can have it now!
ReplyDeleteHello Dearest! Love your plans for moments this Fall and intentions to live in the present (as should we all). Trying to soak it up here too but these hurricanes keep getting me in a tizzy for my poor Girlie down in FL. Thank the Lord she was able to get a flight and comes home tomorrow! Those poor folks down there - I just keep praying too. And sent money to help out. Weather ain't no joke and I'd like the hurricane portion of mother nature to go take a nap now please. Sigh
ReplyDeleteLove the pic of your sweet Momma!! And she does look so content. :) Biggest hugs sent in spirit to you both. ❌⭕️❌⭕️
What a beautiful weekend! I love that picture of your precious mom. I know you're thankful to have her around still, and to see that she is able to enjoy life at this stage in her life!
ReplyDeleteThe mum is huge and gorgeous!! Pretty cardinal at the feeder.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy the photos of your home - it's cozy and cheerful!
ReplyDeleteYour mom looks happy! I love the photo!
Your mom is beautiful!! Yes, I remember that white shoe polish. I was in the band too!! Have a good week!!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad she enjoyed that parade! And yes, I have an amazing mama who always made sure I had everything just so for performances and always welcomed my friends into my home. I am so thankful to her for that. Your mum looks gorgeous! What an amazing color. It’s finally starting to cool off here and feel a teeny bit like fall.
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely memories of your sweet mother! I always enjoy fall with the pretty colors and cooling temps! The small town I lived in had a parade every November. I have a photo of my mother and mother-in-law holding my youngest watching the parade. I need to see if I can find it! Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteThe bird is beautiful ( we don’t have cardinal birds here) y dog also likes to sit inside and finds a ray of sun. Your mother I’m sure his happy to have such a daughter.
ReplyDeleteMemories - of seasons past and of sweet mommas keeping us looking nice:) - are such a joy! Love that photo of your mom. She really does look very happy!! Glad you had a nice first week of October:)
ReplyDeleteInteresting ghost that was the first photo that I saw. When Phil and I were at Country Cottage for dinner this evening, to celebrate our anniversary, there were ghosts made out of white fabric with fake spiders here and there. I enjoy the different colors of tree leaves now. Nice photo of your mom and how she's helped you before you were to be in a parade!! Have a good week!!! ---Becky
ReplyDeleteThank you for the prayers regarding those of us confronting Hurricane Milton. We are as prepared as we know to be and now relaxing on the back lanai, reading, checking blogs, and such.
ReplyDeleteYour sensory adjectives describing Autumn in all of its glory are a pleasure to read for this one who lives in the sub-tropics, wearing shorts and sandals. I do miss Autumn and most of what goes with it (I say "most" because I am not a fan of Halloween). We bought some pumpkin spice bread from the grocery store recently and that was very good with our coffee.
Sounds like a wonderful start to the month for you. Thank you for the movie suggestions. I loved Halloweentown when I watched it last year. I'll have to look up The Wolfman.
ReplyDeleteThe time flies by so quickly that it makes my head spin. One day it’s the Fourth of July, the next day it’s Halloween. I have decided to take it easy on myself in my dotage. I no longer beat myself up for not putting up the decorations that I used to, or try to measure myself against my late mother who managed to put up a Christmas tree in every room of her nine room home each more beautiful than the other. She had my dad. I have just a cat, and he’s not much help.
