Friday Fun On Labor Day Weekend

Hello, my friends. And Happy Friday! Well, the sun has set on another lake summer, and as much as I love autumn, I am always a bit sad when we take our last boat ride of the year. It seems one minute, we are zipping around on the Fourth of July with so many others, tubing, skiing, and swimming in the cool water, a break from summer's hot, humid days. And the next, we are taking an evening ride on a near-empty lake, signs of autumn surrounding us with cooler air, fading leaves, and that distinct feel of fall.

That is life, I suppose. A slow transition from one season to the next. We often seem to cling to one as it ends, even as we happily anticipate the beginning of the next. So, as Steve cleared out the boat and made plans to cover and store it, I took out my Pumpkin Spice candle and made plans to decorate for fall.

Speaking of fall, and you know I love that, here are a few questions for you, my friends! Feel free to leave your answers in the comments. Mine are right beneath.

1. Do you decorate your home for fall? If so, when?

I try to wait until Labor Day. So far, so good!

2. If you decorate for Halloween, do you do it when you put out your fall decor or wait a bit?

I usually wait until the end of September for all the spooky!

3. Do you have a favorite fall scent?

Can you guess? Yankee Candle Pumpkin Spice!!!

4. What fall treat are you looking forward to the most?

Definitely Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread and pumpkin spice creamer. Oh, and Fall Harvest Cake and Spiderweb Munch! Pumpkin Cake with Cream Cheese Icing is good, too. Apple pie. Ohhhhh! Pumpkin Pie!

Happy Labor Day Weekend, my friends! It has been a bit since I have been around visiting. I will rectify that this weekend. We will be back in Maryland for the fall, and I look forward to some slower, cozier days!

  1. So, Halloween decor will go up around the first day of fall, but then some of it sticks around until Thanksgiving because that's the chunk of the year I think of as "fall" and I don't like to rush the Christmas decor. I love the scent of pumpkin too. But I LOVE fall treats! Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffins, with the recipe I got from you, is a family favorite. And apple crisp. I am excited for that!!

  2. Your lake sunset captures are beautiful, Billie Jo. I'm also feeling a little mournful at summer's impending end, but looking forward to autumn days.
I don't really decorate for autumn, but the coffee table will inevitably end up strewn with acorns and conkers :)
Halloween decor usually goes up during the last week in October, then taken down on 1st November.
My favourite scent is pumpkin spice, but I also like gingerbread.
My favourite treats are autumn walks, followed by a delicious hot chocolate and gingerbread. I also enjoy a visit to the pumpkin patch. Xx

  3. Dearest Billie Jo,
A melancholic post about your boating on the lake... Yes, seasons so end and that is part of life's cycle.
To questions 1. and 2. it is a NO. Both of us have never been 'influenced' by commercials nor social media for living in a certain pattern.
We enjoy each season on its own without bringing imported clutter from China into our home or to the front porch—not our philosophy.
Enjoy a Happy Labor Day weekend!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  4. No fall until official end of summer...September 20ish. While I love some fall things, my heart is with summer. I don't love Halloween, but do like pumpkin flavored everything (almost)!

  5. The only holiday I decorate is Christmas. But I do enjoy fall type foods. Bring on the acorn squash, pumpkin pies, zucchini breads, cranberry orange scones, and hearty soups.

  6. Our leaves in Maine are already starting to turn. Bring it on! I won’t switch my candles and whatnot till after Labor Day and no Halloween decorations until October as I’m a clutter hater. But looking forward to coffee by the woodstove and walks on crunchy leaves.

  8. I always wait until the end of September when fall officially hits, and Halloween stuff doesn't come out until October. I always for for apple scented stuff. I'm looking forward to making pumpkin rolls. Apple pie is my favorite, too. I love those lake pictures. I also love the quote you added at the end. It's something I have to remind myself of, especially lately. Hope you and your family enjoy this Labor Day weekend.

  9. Your photos of the sun one the water and small waves are gorgeous!! As you know, I decorate for Fall, but not Halloween. I start fall decorating in August because it takes me so long to do it, so I can take my time.

  11. Beautiful photos to remember the close of your summer on the lake. I usually try to wait until around the middle of September to bring out my Fall decorations. Rarely do I decorate for Halloween. My kiddos all come over on Halloween night and we have a big feast of Soups and Chili. They love helping pass out candy to the littles that drop by. I tend to lean more towards the cinnamon and apple spice scents...and of course vanilla. Happy Labor Day weekend Billie Jo...hope you and your family make sweet memories.

  12. Hi Billie Jo. I love this post - especially those beautiful lake pictures and the quote at the end. Our temperatures are also cooling a bit - the mornings are even chilly. I am also looking forward to fall. I hope you have a cozy Labor Day Weekend!

  13. I do love Fall! I decorate after our town's annual festival which is the 3rd Saturday in September. It just always marks the beginning of autumn for me, with school bands marching in the parade and the scent of barbeque and popcorn at vendor's booths. I'm not big on Halloween, so those decorations are up for maybe a week at the end of October. Happy Labor Day!

  14. Hi Billie Jo~ First of all, I love the quote at the end of the post... it took me a long time to start doing that, it was a life changer! Gorgeous post! There truly is a very subtle transition from summer to fall, and I love it. The lake is so pretty, I'll bet it's hard to say goodbye to boating, it always was for me. Like you, I don't really do much until after Labor day. I don't do Halloween until October either. My favorite scent in the fall is, pumpkin spice, fall woods, and anything with caramel undertones... yum! I love all of the fall foods! I have to say that pumpkins breads and desserts, peach cobbler and caramel corn with candy corn, are a few of my favorite! Have a wonderful Labor Day! Hugs, Barb

  17. I only decorate for Christmas. I like all the seasons and never hurry the next one along. :)

  18. I decorate for fall around the middle of October and it stays up until I decorate for Christmas. We're not huge Halloween people so I just have the fall pumpkins, etc. We have lots of camping planned yet so I'm in no hurry to move the seasons along except for cooler weather than the 90's and even 100's we've had for weeks on end.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  19. It's our favorite time...I hope it's a long, perfect-weather, cozy season! Time flies, whether we're having fun or not, so let's make the most of each day. Yes, I decorate for fall...just simple things like pumpkins, bittersweet, and colorful Indian Corn, - and I'm an odd duck about timing...can't let myself do it until September 1 - Same with Halloween, October 1. Halloween means the same decorations are up as September, and I let them stay through Thanksgiving. But I have to add some silly carved pumpkins and watch some classic movies - and by that I mean nothing gory - just the fun of Scooby Doo, Harry Potter, and of course, The Great Pumpkin! Pumpkin cookies and Chocolate chip Pumpkin bread - I'm ready!
