This Makes Me Happy...Madison Loves Her Job

Yes. She does. She loves her job. And that makes this mommy so happy. Madison is only seventeen, but is beginning her fourth year working at our local Dairy Queen. She has always loved Dairy Queen. As a toddler, she would light right up when we asked if she wanted ice cream. Her first and favorite treat was a small twist in a dish with sprinkles. : )

When she turned fourteen, she asked about getting a job. As parents, Steve and I feel it is important for young people to work. It provides a sense of responsibility and accomplishment, as well as pocket money for gas and treats. : ) Madison knew right away where she wanted to apply. She got the owner's name, called her, and submitted an application. I remember dropping her off for her interview. And she got the job.

She has loved working there. She has become a pro at making the cones with the trademark curl on top. She is so very good working the drive thru, even on the busiest of days. She helps train new workers. In fact, Madison has been so successful at this job she loves, that this year, her boss asked her to be a manager! Yes, that's right. My little Madison, at seventeen, is the youngest manager in the store's history! She will work more hours, be responsible for many more aspects of the day to day running of the store, and most exciting to her...wear a black manager shirt instead of a blue one! It seems my daughter has inherited her love of business from her father and both of her grandfathers. : )

I am so happy for and proud of her. She loves it so, and that makes me so happy. Steve and I have both been blessed to have careers that we absolutely love. Steve runs his family business and loves working with his brothers every day. I loved my first job as a teacher, and now I love each and every day as a mother. I remember working to fix up my first classroom after I was hired. The secretary came down and smiled as she asked me if I wanted to know what my salary would be. I remember thinking that I couldn't believe they were going to pay me for doing something I loved so much! And Madison is the same way. She never even asked about the pay...she just loves it so much.

I am happy and thankful. Loving your job is a blessing. It enables you to enjoy your work, and makes it easy to succeed. Steve and I always tell our children to be sure to love what you do. Madison does. And it shows. And that makes me happy.

All smiles...

on her first day of work! : )

  1. She's so beautiful and her love for her job clearly shows! We love the DQ and their yummy treats. In fact, in the summertime most often when we meet up with my parents on a Sunday afternoon it's for treats at the DQ and fun at the park. It's always the perfect thing and my mom is a HUGE fan of the DQ.

Way to go Madison and keep on doing what you love!

(we sold the business to move here) He actually would like to start up his own lawn business with his Dad, not sure about that. We shall see..ANYWAYS..she is so pretty, love her personality. Blessings

  4. That is so exciting :) I grew up working as a teenager at two different ice cream locations. I really enjoyed working for the public in that area. Great parenting on yours and Steve's part, too. My parents were adamant that my siblings and I started working as soon as we were legal. And if we did not like the job? We had to find another one before quitting one. Great work ethics indeed! I like to call these Character building moments :)

  6. Congratulations Madison!!!! What an awesome responsibility for a 17-year-old! Maybe one day she will own a DQ franchise! Oh how I wish the DQ near us had not closed. It was right near my kid's school and every Friday afternoon we would stop there for a "we made it through another week of school" treat! But, alas, it closed and now we have to stop for frozen yogurt. Boo!!!!! Hiss!!!

  15. Madison could not be any cuter in her uniform!!

I loved having a job when I was a teen...I learned so much. We were just talking yesterday about our soon to be 14 year old and how he'll be getting a job soon (2 years will fly by!) and then our 11 year old will be soon after!

Having a job is such a character building thing to do on so many levels!

  19. Hi Billie Jo! Your daughter is such a beautiful girl, and it sounds like that is true both inside and out. I can see you in her features! She looks so proud, God bless her. I was so impressed by the fact that age 14 she wanted a job, did all the work to apply, and got it. That young lady is going places!

And it's such a blessing to love the jobs you have chosen too. Teaching in a school or at home, your love shines through.
    Happy Tuesday my friend!

  20. I remember my first job. I hated it! I worked for Harkins Theaters in Phoenix, AZ in 1994. I was making $4 an hour, .25 below minimum wage. They worked us 10 hours a day with only a 30 minute break. We did get free movies and popcorn, but my grades suffered for it. I couldn't wait to quit.

It's nice to see a young person treated well in their first job and succeed as well. Her smile is proof of that. Good job Mama for being such a positive influence on her. She will go far one day!!!
