They Should Really Tell You

Good morning, my friends. Monday afternoon, we hopped into the car, drove across the bridge, and arrived at the beach for a few days of ocean air. And a birthday! Yes, my one and only son Rhett Stephen, who came by scheduled c-section on a sunny spring morning, turned twenty-two yesterday. All those well-meaning ladies in the grocery store were right, dang it! It does go way too quickly!

Someone should really remind you of that. Amid all the happiness, flowers, balloons, fanfare, and joy that surround the birth of a baby, someone should sit us down and remind us that we have been gifted this blessing for a time. We will have but a few short weeks to hold, snuggle, and rock our new baby until those tiny limbs start poking out of the swaddle blankets you so carefully washed and stacked, thinking you had forever to use them.

We have but a short time to hold a little hand and push a little one on the swing before friends ride up the driveway, asking to come and play. Suddenly, we are walking past those very same stores we used to dream about shopping in for footie pajamas, sundresses, and matching Christmas clothes. We trade Carter's for American Eagle and the toy aisle for electronics. Summer nights change from waiting for the return of your little one from the neighbor's yard to waiting to hear the car door slam in the driveway a few minutes before curfew. And birthdays go from paper tablecloths with brightly wrapped gifts and cake with Grandma and Grandpa to causal dinners with gift cards and dessert.

They really should tell you all that before you leave the hospital. Right after the instructions on installing a car seat or changing a diaper, someone important-looking with a clipboard should sit you down and tell you all these things. And then, after all that, they should tell you that this is precisely how it is supposed to be. And it is beautiful. All of it. The baby that we hold and love will grow and change. Exactly how a baby is supposed to do. Just like we did. And then, this important person should tell you that your relationship with your adult children will be amazingly wonderful! You will find a best friend in each of your children and begin an incredible new journey together. And you will always have someone to help you with your phone and figure out the streaming channels on the television. If someone had told me all that before I left the hospital with each new bundle of joy, I wouldn't be as surprised that my precious son is twenty-two already! Or then again, maybe I would.

Happy birthday to my son Rhett! He is an old soul, full of compassion and concern for others. He is the funniest person I know and hardworking, too. He loves Taco Bell, being with his family, movies, video games, and his beautiful girlfriend, Kyrstin. It has been my privilege to be his mother all these years, and when I get that twinge of melancholy, I remind myself that the best is yet to come!

Have a beautiful Wednesday, my friends!

Monday Morning Coffee

Good Monday morning! I hope your weekend was a happy, healthy one. We celebrated a birthday here this weekend, and even though I cannot believe it to be true, my baby is fourteen. Yes, this little lady who brings joy to all our lives is now fourteen.

Flynn is a gift to our family. She is so many things; I could never list them all, but I will share some things about her so I can look back and remember one day. Flynn Grace...

Makes our family complete.

Is the most relaxed, easygoing young person ever.

Has a unique relationship with every member of our family.

Is the least judgemental person I know.

Loves music, art, and space.

Is an amazing artist.

Loves movies.

Dislikes tomatoes, pasta, citrus fruits, and fish.

Loves cinnamon rolls and milk.

Embraces the joys of childhood as she navigates the teenage years.

Loves dogs. All dogs.

Has a classy style with a bit of an edge to it.

Has friends of all ages.

Is living proof of God's love.

Happy and blessed 14th birthday, my Flynn Grace!

(Shoutout to Madison, Nicolas, Peyton, Chris, Rhett, and Kyrstin for helping us celebrate Flynn on her special day. Madison and Nicolas watched the pups while we went to lunch and a movie, Peyton made the delicious cake, Rhett secured the tickets to the movie, and Christopher and Kyrstin added so much joy and love to Flynn's day.)

Oh, and one more special friend arrived just in time for Flynn's birthday!

Zip continues to bring joy into our home at Christmas. His magic is appreciated differently now but still enjoyed. I hope my children always remember that we are never too old for the magic.

Have a wonderful Monday of Thanksgiving week, my friends!

Happy September Days

Good Friday morning! September days have blessed us with slightly cooler weather, and I love it. While many people thrive on the hot, sunny summer days, I relish the cooler autumn ones, just like yesterday.

If you have read here for a while, you may remember our beautiful friend, Blueberry Mary. We met Mary and her husband, Tom, years ago at church. We call her Blueberry Mary because she used to pick the best blueberries ever and would always bring us some. Tom passed away several years ago, and Mary often joined us for dinner and game nights. We haven't seen Mary as much since we moved, but we still have weekly phone visits, and at ninety-two, Mary is as sharp as she has always been. She now lives in an assisted living, and this week, Steve and I had the chance to surprise her with a visit!

We had the most wonderful time! She showed us all around, we sat and talked, and I showed her pictures of the kids. She is a wonderful, classy lady; we were so thankful to spend some time with her. Look what she had on her wall. She gave me permission to take a picture of it. Look at this beautiful photo of two young people, ready to begin a life together.

Yesterday morning looked like this. How fitting since yesterday was my birthday! I told you I am an autumn soul. This just sealed the deal.

I had a fantastic day turning fifty-four. I was home, happy with my people, doing what I love: teaching. Flynn and I did homeschool, and Rhett and Kyrstin got lunch for us all. I sat outside for a bit, and then my best friend Heather brought the party to me! She made homemade chicken parmesan, garlic bread, carrot cake, and peanut butter pie! For all of us! It was so delicious! Then there were gifts and laughs and our family tradition of each person sharing something he or she loves about the birthday person and a special memory we share. We have done this forever, and I am always touched by what is shared. My sister Margie called when she was with my momma, so I was able to have a beautiful birthday visit with her on the phone. I thought back fifty-four years to when she was a young woman, bringing her fourth little girl into the world. I thought of all the things she has done for me over the years and how, on that day so many years ago, she wouldn't have thought that someday, that little baby would be a fifty-four-year-old, and she an eighty-six-year-old, and the two would be visiting on the phone. That is the beauty of the circle of life. Living in the moment, letting tomorrow be, and smiling when remembering the past.

I've learned so many things throughout my life, and not least among them is this. When you find joy in doing things for others, allowing others to do the same for you can be difficult. Yet, I finally realized that I cannot rob them of experiencing that same great joy of doing for someone, for blessing them with your care. And so last night, I sat down and let my kids and Heather do it all. They did the cooking, decorating, serving, and cleaning from start to finish. I was so happy and so blessed.

That ends the birthday celebrations for a couple months. Now, we settle into all things autumn. We are heading down to Maryland next week, so I plan on getting some things together and doing a few things around here this weekend. We have a family wedding on Saturday, a visit to see my momma on Sunday, a football game, and a lunch date. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, my friends. Thank you for visiting!

I am looking forward to visiting you this weekend!

Monday Morning Coffee Talk

Good morning, my friends! How was your weekend? Here in Pennsylvania, it was gloriously summerlike and perfect for our plans, which included our final May birthday celebration! Peyton turned twenty-three on May 31, so we celebrated with her Saturday evening. Everyone was able to be here, and we all had a wonderful time. There was tubing on the lake, hot dogs on the grill, a fire with S'mores and mountain pies, presents, and an ice cream birthday cake she didn't have to make herself!

My Posey.
( Her full name is Peyton Rose. )
She shares joy and happiness every single day.
And, man, can she bake!

And with her awesome husband, Christopher. Who appears to have a halo?!

And my husband, who most certainly should have one! He is and has always been the doer of all fun things when it comes to our family. He is the boat driver, roller coaster rider, swim teacher, main concertgoer, drivers ed teacher, and all-around fun guy. He allows me to do what I do best, step back and arrange, organize, and prepare. I could be and still am the stroller pusher, backpack holder, party organizer, and sunscreen sprayer. I am behind the scenes. Exactly where I love to be. Together, we are a pretty good team!

To illustrate my point, allow me to share some photos of what I did while they were all out on the boat. First, I got dinner ready. Which consisted of opening two bags of chips, setting out paper plates, and organizing condiments. So, there's that!

Then, I sat outside with the pups, drank some iced coffee, read a good book, and snapped phone pictures of all the fun. When they were finished, the guys covered the boat, Nicolas cooked the hot dogs, and the girls helped me prepare everything else. Grown children are the best.

Finally, in other news you don't really need to know; I am trying to be more consistent in my healthy eating choices. I am wavering between a solid weight loss program like Weight Watchers, which worked for me before, and just watching myself, cooking, and eating healthier while drinking more water. I am still up in the air about it!

Remember the saga of the spatula? Well, I finally purchased one, and our lives are better for it! Next up were our drinking glasses. We have had the same drinking glasses forever!!! ( This is where Steve always tells everyone it is because I made a SLIGHT error when ordering them and may have selected twelve dozen instead of twelve, but who's counting?? ) They are like those Pizza Hut cups...the plastic with a weird design? Well, we used them for years! Anyway, I finally decided we needed new glasses. And after careful consideration, I decided on these ones from Amazon. They are basic. And pretty. And plastic. I cannot do glass glasses for every day. I know they are better. I just have a thing about broken glass and shards of it, and I just can't. It's a thing.

Well, that is all for today. I hope you have a wonderful Monday, my friends. Stay cool and cozy, and remember to throw some sunscreen on. Thanks for visiting!
