We love traditions, as you may well know if you have read here for any length of time! This year we celebrated a very special day and I am certain we also began a very special tradition. December 13 is St. Lucia Day and we celebrated it for the first time as a family this year. Madison's husband Nicolas is Danish, and in Denmark, St. Lucia Day is celebrated as the Festival of Lights. You can read more about the beautiful traditions celebrating this special day HERE. It is very important for Madison that Nicolas continues to celebrate the special traditions of his beloved Denmark, and she and I thought this would be a special way to do that. Madison made Lussekatter, the traditional sweet bread of St. Lucia Day. I was so proud of her! It was delicious!!
In addition to the day being special for Nicolas and Madison, it was the perfect celebration for Flynn. Flynn and I study many saints during homeschool, and years ago Flynn developed a special devotion to St. Lucy, also known as St. Lucia! We study about her regularly, and she is Flynn's very favorite saint. And finally, she is also special to me because she was born in Italy, which of course holds a most special place in my heart.
We celebrated St. Lucia on Sunday in a simple way by gathering around our table, talking about Danish traditions, reading a book about the Life of Saint Lucia, and enjoying homemade rolls. It was a beautiful way to spend some peaceful time together. Now, as I write this, it is Wednesday morning, and here in Pennsylvania, we are anticipating a major snow event, and Mocha is ready and waiting!
Stay safe and sound, healthy, and cozy my friends.
Thank you for visiting!
What a wonderful tradition! Hope you don't get too much snow! We had about 4 inches last weekend and it was the wet and heavy snow. Have a great day and Merry Christmas to you and your sweet family!
ReplyDeleteI love learning about different traditions from around the world, and what better way to bring everyone together during the holidays! I think little Miss Mocha has the right idea for how to wait out the pending storm!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful new tradition. I love how we continue to expand our horizons and make new memories a part of life. Beautiful!!!! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fabulous new tradition and that sweet bread looks delicious! Enjoy the snow.
ReplyDeleteHow delightful, to have Danish Christmas Time Traditions to celebrate too... I do love this, so much.
ReplyDeleteLove the name Lucia, since it is the name of a character in the "Make Way For Lucia" books. A delight, if you have never read them!!! Old, old books but so, so, so much fun.
We too are expecting a snow storm!!!!!!!! -clapping hands- It's about time!!! I am a true Daughter of the North. Snow should come, in the cold weather! -smile-

That sounds like a great new addition to your list of traditions. :) It is currently snowing here in Ohio; makes me grateful that we are in quarantine and aren't allowed to go anywhere. I don't want to have to worry about driving in the snow. I hope you, Flynn, Mocha and all enjoy the snow!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful tradition! I do love how you make life a celebration!
ReplyDeleteThere was a girl on my college dorm floor who had been an exchange student and she shared with us all about St. Lucia. It was a fun thing for all us girls to do.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are hunkered down. The snow has begun here (about 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh). The ground was white very quickly and it continues to come down. It's not a gentle snow. It is blowing sideways in the wind. Oh...I just remembered I need to turn on the inflatable decorations so they are not frozen to the ground! I hope they can withstand the wind.
I love it so much!! I have always wished we celebrated, so many of my Minnesota friends did annually but it was never my family. You've inspired me to just adopt it next year anyhow!
ReplyDeleteWe celebrated this for many years with my girls. We were so grateful to get a Lucia crown that worked on batteries as our oldest wore one with real candles and the wax would drip on her hair and neck. As St Lucia cam into the harbor on a boat filled with grain for the starving people, she was dressed in white with a red sash and she held candles. that is how she was remembered. Bringing light and food to the starving.
ReplyDeleteAwww Mocha is so adorable! We are getting that snow here on the southern end of PA. I'm staying cozy, for sure! I've heard of St. Lucia but never knew much about it. I guess I better study up. I love learning new things.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful new tradition indeed, Billie Jo, I always leave so inspired! Stay warm and cozy while during this most blessed season.

Beautiful celebration of St. Lucia day! Enjoy your warm and cozy home and stay safe in the storm. HUGS!
ReplyDeleteOur youngest daughter is called Lucy so it is a Saint close to our hearts. A wonderful ne tradition for you as a family and one that encompasses the love you all have for Nicolas.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you have a new tradition and recognize St. Lucia's day. At first, I thought you were talking about the three children of Fatima, Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco. They are my beloved Saints. It's so special that Flynn is getting to know the Saints. There are so many special and beautiful ones to learn about. The sweet bread looks so good, and a very thoughtful sentiment of Madison to make some on this special day. Maybe you could tell Flynn about Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco. I think she would really enjoy hearing about them. : )
