Checkers
Last fall, when we were at the beach, my best friend Marian found a game of Checkers in our condo. While I was busy with laundry and things, she taught Flynn to play. I didn't even realize it. And I didn't appreciate it either. When we got home, Flynn mentioned it and I realized we didn't even own a game of Checkers. We have iPads and computer games. We have a Wii...granted it is covered in dust...and we have an Xbox. We have Scrabble and Monopoly too. But can you believe we didn't have Checkers? I quickly ordered a game from Amazon, and quickly remembered how much fun it is. Simple, good old fashioned fun. No batteries or cords or chargers needed. Well, when Steve and I were away recently, I found a large game. I brought it home and set it up on our little game table. I leave it out all the time. And you know what? We play it all the time! And I love it. I love that our children...as well as Steve and myself...are spending time together playing a simple game of Checkers. And I have my dear friend Marian to thank for that. : )

How lovely! I hope my kiddos will want to sit and play checkers when they're a little older. I think Christopher is still a bit too young yet. Soon maybe though!

Love this...perfect and simple! Craig's grandpa made each of the grandkids a Chinese checkers board a million years ago that he hand drilled all the little holes into and gave them to the grandkids for Christmas one year. We still have that board and it sits on our game table along with the box of marbles and every now and then the kids will rediscover it. It is definitely a treasure because of where it came from, but also because it brings all of us together in such a completely different and unplugged way. :)

ReplyDeleteI have a lot of the old fashioned wooden toys and games and my Grandbabies love them. Family time together is the best.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but checkers drives me bonkers. I just don't enjoy it. Just like chess. I don't know - too much thinking/not fast enough moving? However, I really enjoy Chinese Checkers.

What a pretty (and country) looking game of checkers you have. How did you know that just last night I said to Scott, "let's play a game tomorrow night with the girls. And I was thinking of a post I could do... I think I'll just post to see YOUR post! Love it!

ReplyDeleteI haven't played that for years, well, decades probably. You are right, such a great game. We call it Draughts in England. Another one of those funny name things!
