What a week! It started out here...
And ended here...
Yep. Last Sunday, we left our cozy home tucked inside the beautiful autumn trees of Maryland and traveled back to our cozy home on a small lake in Pennsylvania. What have we done this first week of November? Plenty.
We voted, had our best friends over to watch the returns and eat Peyton's amazing cupcakes, and rested near the fire and on the couch.
I also went to my semi-yearly physical with my primary care physician at the first appointment of the day, of course. I ran several loads of laundry, attempted to locate all the random things I could not find at the other house, had a cozy lunch with my girls at Petyton's house, and made plans to see some favorite people while we were here. But by far, the very best thing I did this week was this...
I spent the afternoon with my beautiful mother! She was doing great, and we had the best time!
We had a great visit, talking and laughing. It was a good day. I will tuck that one into my heart and pull it out whenever needed. We also prayed the rosary with Mom and the residents. Three of the nicest women I have known since I was a kid come every Wednesday to pray with the residents. Mom and I led the first decade of prayers, and Mom knew every word. Steve and I also met with some of the staff there, so Madison got to visit her gram and help her with her lunch. These two have been this close since the day Madison was born.
As for the meeting, no matter how good or clean the facility is, families must remember it is acceptable and necessary to advocate for their loved ones. Sometimes, phone calls and emails are not received in the intended tone, and in-person meetings, while uncomfortable, are imperative for positive communication among families, staff, and physicians. I can support and appreciate the facility in which my mother resides, but I am still entitled to ask questions about the care she is receiving and the medication she is prescribed. I have said it before, and I will say it forever: I will be my mom's voice as long as she needs me to be. She was my voice, my first teacher, biggest supporter, and strongest advocate, and remains my best friend. So that's that.
Well, I am off to get ready for the day. This morning, we have two dogs to take to the vet, Mocha and Cosmo, for their yearly checkups. Later, we are going to Hallmark for their Holiday Open House, followed by dinner with Peyton and Chris and Steve's brother Todd and his wife Beth. I am so happy to spend time with them. Have a lovely weekend, my friends.

It sounds like a beautiful week and great plans to continue through the weekend. Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteHi Billie Jo! So glad you had a good and productive week. Both of you homes are located in beautiful areas. It's great that you had a good and memorable day with your mom. Have a good weekend. See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful week you have had and I am so proud for you!! Your mom looks great and how blessed she is to be a big advocate for her. We have found it to be a very necessary thing with not only my parents while they were living, but with Sam's dad now that he is in memory care. I agree...no matter how nice the facility is, it is necessary to be on top of things and to ask plenty of questions. Hope you all enjoy a wonderful evening dinner and get to relax this weekend. I love the fire and the adorable picture of your sweeties in front of it.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about being your mom's advocate. My biggest regret is that Mom passed away in a hospital during Covid and neither my sister nor I were allowed in. All communication was through very brief phone calls. Mom was not able to advocate for herself and we were not able to adequately via the phone.
ReplyDeleteDearest Billie Jo,
ReplyDeleteGlad you managed once more for breaking up from the mountains and traveling back to your lakeside home. Always bittersweet...
What lovely and happy photos with your Mom!
You are a true daughter for being her voice and looking out for her well being.
Hugs,
Mariette
I think I've said it before, but you look so much like your Mom. You are both so beautiful. You have a Hallmark store there? Sounds like fun! Your sunset photo is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds perfect. So glad you spent time with your Mom. I love all the photos you shared. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteYes, the in person care conferences are so so important. Emails and phone calls can only go so far!! So glad you got to spend time with your mom, time is such a gift!!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your puppy snuggles and time with Peyton and Christopher!
It is always nice to spend time with our family. I understand you are your mother’s voice because sometimes here we have to struggle for or elderly to be well treated in these kind of structures. I also had to be careful with my mother.
ReplyDeleteAnother wonderful visit with your mom! How blessed you all are. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing it is to visit with your mother!! She looks lovely. Hope your doctor visit was good and that the pups had a good Vet visit! Your photos are all wonderful! xo
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pictures you shared, Billie Jo! It also sounded like you had a wonderful visit with your mother. Hope your physical went well and hope the pups had good appointments as well. Enjoy the meal with your friends and family. Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to see pictures of you and Madison with your mother. She looks quite well and I know that makes you happy. You are so right about residents having an advocate to see that all is well with their care. Have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you were able to spend time with your Mom. I know your sister is there often but I'm sure she was THRILLED to see you. Thank you for the support in advocating for parents in facilities. Gosh, we've sure learned that in the past two years. Especially now that her memory is so bad. Each day we notice it getting worse. It's a great facility with wonderful people but we're still the ones that know her and her issues better than anyone else.
ReplyDeleteI love the patriotic cupcakes. How fun to spend the evening together watching the election. Your family celebrates everything together and I love that.
Blessings and love,
Betsy
Your mama looks so great! I know you had a wonderful visit! I'm so glad you could spend some quality time with her, and I'm so glad you stay on top of things concerning her care. Hope the doctor visit went well. I think I remember you saying that those were tough for you. But it is DONE! Yay! Your blog theme is so super cute! I love the little turkeys. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely week and visit with your mom! I wholeheartedly agree about being the voice of someone who has lost theirs. That is the beautiful circle of life! I hope you have a wonderful time away in Pennsylvania (or time at home?), and I look forward to reading more about your days there. Xoxo
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a very full week! I love that picture of the sunset over the lake. And the puppies curled up by the fireplace? That's a great photo. Makes me want to snuggle up next to them. And your mom. Such priceless moments.
ReplyDeleteYou have beautiful views, wherever you are, Billie Jo. Those trees. That sunset. Stunning.
ReplyDeleteAnd those pups look perfectly content. Xx
Your mom looks great, Billie Jo!!! Such a lovely post, my friend. smiles
ReplyDeleteI loved the picture of your mom's hands holding the rosary beads. I'm so glad you were able to spend such quality time with your mother. And it is a wonderful thing that you are advocating for her. Have a cozy weekend!
ReplyDeleteHello my friend!
ReplyDeleteThis week, I voted also. Rather than watch the election returns, my husband and I decided to go to bed early. We found the results in the morning. We had an absolutely fabulous blessing this week. We got our heater fixed! We have heat, and it's getting colder. Praise God for His blessings. ~smile~
I've been doing a bit more decorating, and I'm planning for Thanksgiving. I hope to get my autumn china out of the garage tomorrow.
Have a wonderful week!
Laura
Looks like you had a good time together with your mom. I miss voting in person as it's not done here in Oregon. But we did vote and turned in the ballots a few days after they arrived in the mail. My daughter and I were looking online later on Tuesday to see results. Phil and I went to see the Best Christmas 🎄 Pageant Ever this afternoon. It was good to see then we went to a restaurant for dinner. Now home where it's warmer. It's cold outside tonight. Have a good weekend with blessings, Becky
ReplyDeleteYour mom's shirt is so pretty with all the colors! Billie Jo, I got a tear in my eye when you mentioned that your mother, with her illness, still knows all the words when reciting The Rosary. How beautiful that is. I say The Rosary every day, and it's a special and peaceful time for me. I love the picture of you and your mom and also Madison with her. I noticed the leaves on the window - how festive, and perfect for the Autumn season. And the picture of the dogs by the fire is just so charming and cozy. Loved your heartwarming post today, my friend.

Wonderful memories you made and tucked away in your heart this week, Billie. Jo. I always find so much love and coziness when I visit!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about being an active advocate, for our loved ones, as I too have a family member living in an assisted living facility!
Blessing,
Sue
