Hello! Happy Friday. This week went by so quickly for me. Did it for you? It was Monday morning, then Wednesday, and now it is Friday again. What happened to what my momma used to call the "lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer"? Remember when summer days seemed to last forever? We got up early. Ate a Poptart while watching The Price is Right. Then we would put on our play clothes and head outside, or put on our suits and head to the pool. After a bit, we would come home, and Mom would make us lunch. My favorite? She would put some ham and Swiss cheese on two slices of Wonder Bread, wrap them in a paper towel, and microwave them just until the cheese started to melt. I can still taste those sandwiches! After lunch, we would watch some TV or play a game while my mom ironed or talked to my Grandma on the phone. At 4:35, my sisters and I would gather around the TV to watch our favorite show, The Brady Bunch. After that, we would help Mom get dinner ready. Sometimes I would make a pudding or a jello pie for dessert.
By 5:30, my dad had pulled into the driveway from work, usually in his truck, his arm resting on the rolled-down window. We would sit at our spots at the table in our yellow daffodil kitchen and talk about our day. After dinner, my sister Margie and I would clean up the kitchen and then either head outside or run through the backyard to the playground. The playground had activities from 6:00 to 8:00 every weeknight. We would play kickball or swing until we were ready to head home. Most nights, Dad would ask who wanted to go for a ride, and we'd pile into the truck to drive around our small town, and sometimes we'd stop for a hard ice cream cone. When the sun finally faded, we got cleaned up, grabbed the pajamas that we had put under our pillows that morning, and headed to bed. My two sisters and I shared a room, so sleep was secondary to games, books, giggles, and arguments. Finally, I went to sleep in my cozy spot on the bottom bunk, happy, content, tired, and blissfully unaware that those precious summer days would not last forever.
Now, the days seem shorter, and the weeks pass more quickly, and suddenly I am the mom of grown kids. I pray I gave them the same wonderful summer days when they were young. Looking back, I remember we sure did have fun. And we still do, because there is no expiration date on having fun with the people you love, is there?
My camera roll is filled with pictures from morning walks, and that is about all! We did get rain, so everything is green again. And the pond is filled once more.
If I am not walking, doing laundry, cooking, or homeschooling, you will find me here, on our screened-in porch, coffee in hand.
And lastly, a few images from Pinterest to finish off the week, just to remind anyone dealing with OCD or anxiety that you are not alone. Sometimes it can pop up out of nowhere when you are just living your life, simply to remind you it is still there. Just acknowledge it for what it is and move on.
One more to leave it on a lighter note:
Have a nice weekend, my friends!
BillieJo

Hi Billie Jo! I love this post! Yes, my summer memories are much like yours. Isn't it such a blessing to have such memories?! I love the pictures from your morning walks. You live in such a beautiful area! I love the memes at the end. I suffer from anxiety, so I know just what you are talking about! The last one about chips made me laugh out loud! Potatoes chips are my weakness and I 100% understand! I hope you have a great weekend. See you again soon!
ReplyDeleteYes, I do remember when summer felt like forever. Those were the days. Your camera roll is great. Hope you have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post, Billie Jo! I love the pictures from your morning walks and the graphics at the end (especially the potato chip one). What happened to the "lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer" is that we got older. Now, the days pass in a blur. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat last meme! So. true. Your childhood summer days sound. much like mine were only we spent virtually all day, every day, outside. On bikes, playing tag, playing Barbies or baby dolls. Making mud pies and pretending we owned a bakery. The neighbors had 11 kids so there was never a lack of someone to play with! Now the days are flying by too fast.
ReplyDeleteI hope your weekend is a wonderfully blessed one.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
I haven’t thought about the Price Is Right in such a long time. I was introduced to it when visiting my in-laws many years ago. Brings a big smile so thank you for reminding me :) Thank you also for sharing those sweet memories. I am 100% certain your children have their own very happy memories of their growing up years. Wonderful photos, another wonderful read. Have a very happy weekend my friend :)
ReplyDeleteI loved reading about your childhood! It was so beautiful and innocent. Would you believe when I was growing up, there were no microwaves! Your screened in porch!! I miss having one so much. I grew up with one and loved it so much and loved to play in it, and watch storms from it's safety. That was over 60 years ago now. Yours is gorgeous!! And I can't even see the screens!
ReplyDeleteEVERY week seems to fly by now. Yes when we were kids summer seemed to last forever.
ReplyDeleteYes to days of the week flying by. They go faster and faster, but we do just need to let go, and let God! Life was simpler when I was a kid. No computers, no cellphones, TV had three channels in black and white, we didn't even know what a microwave was, and our white Wonder Bread got put in the toaster to warm it up enough to melt cheese! Good memories of such good times. My dad also liked to take us all out for a ride that usually ended up with two dips of ice cream in a cone!! Dad like black walnut, mom always got butter pecan, my brother like raspbetty, and my choice was always chocolate! Great memories!! Happy weekend! xo
ReplyDeleteBillie Jo....your words just carried me back about 50 years. Sounds much like my time growing up...and it was so good. Time does seem to be passing by so quickly. Perhaps it's the business of life these days. Our kids had many of the good summers like Sam and I had....grandkids, they love the outdoors, but they are also so busy with soccer, softball, dancing and such... The summers past sure have given me some wonderful memories. Hope your weekend is full of sunshine, good food and great fellowship..
ReplyDeleteBillie Jo, we had the best childhood era didn't we? The Price is Right was a staple, as was The Brady Bunch. Scooby Do on Saturday mornings, along with The Flintstones, The Jetsons and all the rest. I think about summer lunches and they were the same every day - sandwiches and chips. We didn't have variety. We just ate what our moms gave us and didn't complain. Kids aren't like that anymore. I can't believe June is up and July is just next week. That went by so fast! But, as much as I'm enjoying the very long days, I won't be mad when the temps drop about 20 degrees. I hope you have a great weekend on your beautiful porch! Thanks for checking on me this week. I really appreciate it :)
ReplyDeleteLove your summer memories! I also remember the blissful days of summer that seemed to be lasting forever! Ha ha on that last picture!
ReplyDeleteI have some very happy memories of when my four were young. I created our own summer camp, complete with field trips and tie-dyed tee shirts so I could always find my kids in the crowd! We went to parks, museums, places around Austin. Ate our fair share of sno cones and were at the pool at least two days a week, or more. I had them doing workbooks, signed up for swim teams, sports camps, bowling leagues, and scout camps. They were brown as a nut when school started back up, and ready to get back to it. Summer never lasted long enough for me. (:
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post today! Such wonderful memories of summers. They were really wonderful days growing up. I agree that time just seems to speed by. I remember when I retired that I thought time would drag but it seems to be the opposite. I look at the clock and its 10 am and a minute later it's 4 pm!
ReplyDeleteYou have beautiful places to walk, and I just love your screened in porch. If I had something like that, I'd be there all day long. Have a great weekend!
I am sad for kids today who grow up not knowing the joys of staying outside playing after dark. Kick the can and Capture the flag were summer night staples for all the neighborhood kids when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad your family is close...kids now a days have no idea what family is. Wishing you a beautiful weekend.
ReplyDeleteLovely summer days you had as a child. I had some similar experiences at times. I do cherish them. Those days seem so long ago and so different from today. I tried to give our kids the same experiences of good ole fashion summers too. :)
ReplyDeleteYour summer memories are precious. Thank you for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteI try to enjoy all of our beautiful seasons, but my childhood memories are either of long hot summer days, or of Christmas. Xx
