I don't know about you, but March is slowly working its way up in my ranking of months. My younger self thought of March as one long, uneventful stretch of days, seemingly void of any excitement, filled with monotonous days of simply being. Today, while March itself has not changed, my feelings toward this month have evolved from disdain to complete appreciation and thankfulness.
Young me wanted to rush through the March days, mundane as they were, and jump into a spring that would lead to summer. March was long, boring, and uneventful to a teenage me, always looking ahead to the next exciting time. Now, middle-aged me finds comfort and joy in the very same days I once found boring and simple. I am loving this month, sandwiched between the rush of the holidays and their aftermath and the business of long summer days. I am thankful for the days that follow one another without too much thought of what comes soon, because for me, March is fairly empty of commitments. While I know it is temporary, and April will bring a calendar filled with events, I am hunkering down in this wild, weather-filled, transitional month of March.
So what did this week look like around here? Aside from the St. Patrick's Day festivities, not much. Which, as you probably know, is perfectly alright with me.
Flynn and I worked on empirical formulas in Chemistry, and I remain grateful for my attentiveness to this subject some forty years ago.
Ask me to watch college basketball any other time, and I will politely decline. March Madness, however, is a whole different ballgame. Pardon the pun. I love watching it, perhaps because I enjoy getting to know certain players and their stories. Plus, I love rooting for the underdog.
And how special is it when your son's girlfriend surprises you with a delicious iced coffee while you are watching the basketball tournament? Very. Thank you, Kyrstin!
A fun fact about me is that I have streaks with food. I can eat a certain thing for lunch for days on end, and then, for no apparent reason, I change course to something completely different. Case in point: I had been eating noodles and milk for several days now, which is a bowl of comfort consisting of noodles, hot milk, butter, salt, and pepper that my mom used to make. Yesterday, out of the blue, I decided I wanted a salad. No reason. But it was good.
Also, yesterday, Madison took Flynn so they could both get their hair done. I am so thankful that Madison loves doing that, and they have so much fun together. Speaking of fun, Flynn decided to go red for summer, and she loves it! While I was skeptical, I have to admit, I truly do think it looks great on her, and her happiness makes me love it even more. Sometimes, letting go and loosening the reins is difficult, but essential for our children to grow. And as my momma used to say, "That is their job...to grow!" My job? Roots and wings, right?!
Well, that is about it for this week. We are heading to the condo for the weekend, which will most certainly include basketball on TV, reading on the beach, Mass, and some good food. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friends. I will leave you with a few pictures I came across recently that have no context, except to say they make me laugh!
Happy Weekend!
Billie Jo

Oh my - chemistry - didn’t click with me back then, I couldn’t even begin to teach it - hats off to you, I think that’s wonderful! March Madness-my son was lucky enough to play in the band up in Chicago, sadly OSU did not advance. Today he’s on a bus heading off to the women’s Frozen Four in Pennsylvania - last year of college. Thank you (and your sweet mom) for the wise words of letting go…for me, so much easier said than done. Have a lovely weekend - and yes, I’m all about enjoying some quiet time “in my chambers” as we say!
ReplyDeleteKudos for paying attention in Chemistry...and still remembering it!! Was grateful for vidoes (albeit incredibly boring videos!) when I was homeschooling and it came time for Chemistry!! Enjoy this beauty of a weekend:)
ReplyDeleteI'm loving March too - the gateway to Spring and Summer!
ReplyDeleteGood for you for the chemistry knowledge. I didn't retain it. :)
Flynn looks so cute - love that red on her.
March sure has had its mix of weather. One good thing though, the snow doesn't last all that long in March! :)
ReplyDeleteOh chemistry! Good for you for remembering it! Charlotte took it in high school, Camille had to take it in college, because I didn't teach it! How nice of Krystin to get you a Dunkin! I love surprises like that. Flynn's hair is super cute, I know what you mean about letting go...I used to be strict about make up and all of that stuff, but now I realize they want to feel good about themselves, and to just let them be, and tell them how beautiful they are. She is so blessed to have a big sister to do things like that with her, too. :).
ReplyDeleteIsn't it so good to finally be in SPRING?! Glad homeschooling is so successful and you remember chemistry! Flynn looks lovely, it's good for kids to have the small freedoms on their appearance. Within reason of course and red seems within reason to me. I just love how your family is always loving on each other with treats and drop ins and time together. Roots and wings, and clearly the roots are deep in your family. What an inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteI just adore Flynn's hair, smiles. Thank you for your inspiring posts my friend. smiles
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed being here today, dear Billie Jo. I love how your children remain close and enjoy each other's company. Those little things like Madison and Flynn going together to get their hair done are absolutely precious...and Rhett's girlfriend bringing you an iced coffee...so special.
ReplyDeleteHappy first day of spring, my friend. xx
Hello!!!! What a perfect month to me. I also can attest that I felt the same way years ago about March and now I love March and April. March kicks off hiking season for me. It is short lived due to our extreme heat we get starting about June 1st. So, now I love it. It is a month I have come to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteI also know that April brings a lot of church duties for me as Pastor's wife for Easter, Mother's Day prep, and graduations that come in May. So, I agree.. March is before the madness to me. :) Krystin seems like such a wonderful person! How thoughtful!!!!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I also agree... I love 5 pm... I head after kitchen clean up to my spot to withdraw! LOL
March has been crazy busy for me (but GOOD crazy busy)! I hated chemistry and felt great getting a final C in the class. Got an A in biology. Loved it. Hated chemistry. LOL It was such a very long time ago! I enjoyed your post, Billie Jo. Happy weekend and enjoy the condo!
ReplyDeleteI love March! It's filled with the promise of warmer days.
ReplyDeleteI often withdraw in the evenings. Maybe not at 5 pm, but its's not uncommon for me to be in bed listening to YouTube or reading by 8pm. I call it my time to unwind.
Your salad looks great! I'm like you and tend to end lunch on repeat and the change on a dime to next obsession.
I am right there with you for March Madness. We do watch "our" team fairly regularly. Translation: The game is on TV and I read while looking up occasionally. I
ReplyDeletemarvel at how some of the players look so small on the court and then you see them standing next to a ref or coach and realize even the "tiny" players are well over 6 feet tall, but are dwarfed by the over 7 footers.
Ugh to chemistry and physics. I remember being sad to learn that XR school involves physics and mechanics and such. Just pass the class, I was advised. You'll barely use it! 'Twas true!
ReplyDeleteI had to take a second look to make sure that was Flynn.. The red is so pretty and it compliments her very well. It's great that the girls have such fun together. Right now...our TV is full of Basketball. Sam loves March madness and I just watch along with him. Hope you all have a fun filled weekend...I know you will.
ReplyDeleteAs always, your post here is a delight. Oh wait, except for that white board with the chemistry equations. That is a subject I GREATLY struggled with both in high school and college. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of eating noodles that way, but I copied-and-pasted a note to myself with what you said about it. It does indeed sound comforting and I hope to try it.
And the graphics at the end of this post -- what a scream!! The first one and the 3rd one are me. No doubt.
lol on the poney tail. That's me! Love the red hair and that you've embraced March. Very cool. Go you. Rah.
ReplyDeleteFlynn's hair is gorgeous!!!! You truly are as close to being the perfect Mom as one can get. Wow, how on earth can you even begin to understand all the chemistry ciphering? Your memes gave me such a laugh!!
