Fish Frys And Basketball

Tradition is a funny thing, isn't it?  For us, late March means Lent, which also means fish fry on Fridays. Technically, we could eat fish fry any other time of the year, but we don't. I assume some restaurants serve fish fry on random Tuesdays in August, but I would never think of ordering one then. Go figure. And basketball. We always watch college basketball in March. We each have favorite teams and watch each game as if our lives depended on them winning. I can't be sure, but I think these teams play other games earlier in the year. I would never think of watching one them. But call it March Madness and I am all about cheering for that sixteenth ranked team from some small school I have never heard of. Again, go figure.

Traditions keep us grounded. No matter what chaos is happening around us, knowing that our church is serving the best fish fry on Friday night and that we will meet our friends and family there brings a sense of calm and peace. Our busy lives leave little time for following a small college basketball team all season, but for those few weeks in March, we gather around the television and cheer for teams based on colors and standings and mascots.

Our weekend consists of...you guessed it...fish fry and basketball. And I am happy. Do you have any springtime traditions, my friends? I'd love to hear about them. Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. We watch March Madness and sad to say our team, University of Tennessee, lost out last night to Purdue. It was a fun game to watch tho and we are still proud of their effort. Love fish fries too! lol

  2. I don't have many spring traditions, but maybe it's time to begin some. I do always make sure to go to Good Friday service at noon if I can.

  3. Know what I love about you? Well, a lot of things, but especially in today's post, I love that you are about traditions! That is something that isn't easy to find these days and I just love how you celebrate life...at home, at church, with friends, with family. You make me realize, my sweet friend, that there is something in every. single. day. to celebrate. xo

  4. March is such a lovely month! We're still covered in snow but slowly starting to melt. it was 29 degrees earlier this morning. My grandparents were Catholics and they had fish on Fridays for Lent. I like fish fried or in a stew. My son and my husband are sports fan. I must confess that I have never got into sports very much. I go a bit crazy with the World Soccer Cup though.

  6. WE enjoy fish fry all during the year haha! We have kind of a 'competition' going with our friends as to who can find the BEST one so we're always on the look out for a new place to try. I'm not sure we have any 'spring' traditions other than cleaning out the garage once it gets warm! My favorite thing to do INSIDE is when I change out the curtains in some of the rooms from the heavy, winter ones to the light, flowy ones or swap out the duvets and pillows for the summer ones. It makes me VERY happy since I detest winter haha!

  7. I enjoy fish fry all year long. Our old church had the best fish fry during Lent, but it really wasn't that good. The restaurants do it better. Yours looks really good though! We watch basketball all season when Villanova is playing but Joe has lost interest with them out of the running this year. He peeks in here and there and will probably watch the final four. Happy Spring and happy weekend!

  8. So true! I make a bracket every year and I don't even like to watch basketball. (The squeaking shoes to me is like raw chicken to you. I just can't.) I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  9. I'm not sure what fish fry is (sorry, British!), but it certainly looks good. I was going to say that no, no spring habits or traditions here, but then I thought I'm wrong. I always start making the same recipes at around this time of year, and turned the house upside down earlier this week to find my folder of spring and summer recipes that I like! Have a glorious weekend. x

  12. Our Springtime tradition is taking a family vacation. We did it every year when our family was young and now that everyone is off on their own, we started up again 5 years ago and it has really been wonderful. Love your traditions, my husband would fit right in with your family. He loves baseball and fish fry!

  13. We are the same way around here- watching basketball only when March Madness comes around. Or things like pumpkin pie- we could have it every weekend, but I absolutely never eat it until Thanksgiving comes around. Funny! :)
